          Early Life and Education

          Immelt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Donna Rosemary Immelt, a schoolteacher, and Joseph Francis Immelt, an executive at GE.

          He earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Dartmouth College, where he played football and was president of the Phi Delta Alpha fraternity. He later received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

          Career at GE

          Immelt joined GE in 1982 and has served in various leadership roles.

          He was appointed president and CEO of GE Medical Systems in 1997. In 2001, he succeeded Jack Welch as CEO
